The majority of Austrians are members of the Roman Catholic Church. Especially in Vienna, however, a large number of churches and prayer houses of many other religions can be found. Special mention should be made of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, one of Vienna’s trademarks, the Ruprechtskirche, the oldest Catholic church in Vienna, the Protestant church in the Dorotheergasse, the Jewish Synagogue in the city center, the Russian Orthodox Church on Mexikoplatz, the Islamic mosque on the banks of the Danube River and the Buddhist Pagoda in Freudenau. The church in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna can be seen in Disney’s THE THREE MUSKETEERS. Filming in churches is generally granted after an evaluation of the script. The priest, or in the case of a cathedral, the Bishop’s offices, have to be contacted for permits.
