What The New York Times says about Austrian wines...
Vines are cultivated on the soft and fertile hills of the Eastern provinces of Lower Austria, Vienna, Burgenland and Styria (also known as the “Austrian Tuscany”). Austria is a small wine producer but the high quality of the product has been repeatedly recognized at wine trade fairs and at international wine tastings promoting the country as one of the most interesting wine growing regions of the world.
In some areas, the tradition of wine growing goes back 500 years to tales of emperors and kings who liked to enjoy a fine drop. Picturesque little towns, sleepy villages on the wine slopes and romantic cobblestone lanes with idyllic press houses are waiting to be discovered. The website Wines from Austria gives an overview of all Austria’s wine regions.
